The day, hour by hour

  1. 09:30Pickup

A civilised start — Udaipur is not a city that rewards rushing.

  2. 10:00City Palace

Two hours through courtyards, mirror rooms and balconies looking straight down onto the lake. The largest palace complex in Rajasthan.

  3. 12:15Jagdish Temple and the old lanes

A working seventeenth-century temple in the middle of the bazaar, then the miniature-painting workshops behind it.

  4. 13:30Lunch

A rooftop, because in Udaipur that is the correct answer.

  5. 15:30Saheliyon ki Bari

The garden of the maidens — fountains, lotus pools and shade, and a genuine break from monuments.

  6. 17:00Lake Pichola boat

An hour on the water with the palaces turning gold. The best sixty minutes in the city.

  7. 18:30Return

Back at your hotel, or dropped in the old city for dinner.

Questions people actually ask

How many days does Udaipur deserve?

Most people give it two and wish they had given four. It is the one Rajasthani city where doing very little is the correct itinerary.

Is the Lake Pichola boat worth it?

It is the best hour in Udaipur. Take the late-afternoon departure — the palaces go gold, the light drops, and the whole city rearranges itself.

Can we visit the Lake Palace hotel?

Only as a resident or with a restaurant reservation, which is limited and books ahead. The boat passes close enough for the photograph either way.

Does the lake ever dry up?

In years of poor monsoon it drops sharply and boats may not run. It is worth checking in April and May of a dry year before building a day around it.

Is there good shopping?

Miniature painting, which Udaipur is genuinely famous for. Prices range from tourist trinket to serious work — your guide will show you the difference rather than take you to a commission shop.

Is it a good first stop in Rajasthan?

It is the gentlest, so it works well as a landing point or as a recovery after Jaipur and Jodhpur. There is no wrong order, only a wrong pace.
